Borobudur temple cleared of Merapi`s volcanic ash
Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The Borobudur temple in Magelang regency, Central Java, will soon be cleared of volcanic ash following the eruption of Mt Merapi on Tuesday, a spokesman said.

Spokesman of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko, Yogyakarta, Suraji said that Borobudur had also been showered by material and volcanic ash from Mt Merapi.

According to the Borobudur conservation institute, the volcanic ash which also covered the ancient Buddhist temple contained sulphur which will harm the temple`s stone structure, he said here Wednesday.

He added that sulphur may damage the temple`s stone structure, and therefore the volcanic ash covering the temple needs to be cleared immediately. 

He said the clearing process will last at least hree days, during which tourists and other visitors may still visit the temple but only up to zone 2.

The work on clearing the volcanic ash may be completed on October 29, 2010, and the job will be finished earlier if it rains heavily.

"The management of PT. Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko and the Borobudur Conservation Institute have askd for an apology from the tourists visiting the temple when the work is still under way," Suraji said.

He said PT. Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan abd Ratu Boko is the managing authority of the temple withe technical direction of the Directorate General of History if the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The company is a state company with a mission turning the tourist park a World Class Culture Tourist Destination. Borobudur as a UNESCO world cultural heritage is the the world`s largest Buddhist temple in the world, Suraji said.(*)
